Song of The Day – Ben Salter “Coward”

pop/folk/rock

Ben Slater is best know as one of the members of The Gin Club, Giants of Science and The Wilson Pickers. He has now brought you a song all of his own, written 10 years ago with the working title “yellow” and renamed “Coward” after Coldplay had their massive hit and claiming the name yellow. The Song Coward comes from Ben’s forthcoming debut album “Cat”, which was funded via fans on Indiegogo.com, they reached a total of $7,000!!  The Album will be out on the 5th of August and “Coward” you can download for free from Ben’s website once June the 3rd rolls around.

Coward is similar in styling to Neil Fin and Elliot smith as apposed to the works of his respective bands. Ben describes the song, being about “girls, share housing and moclobemide” – which is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) drug primarily used to treat depression and social anxiety.  That word, moclobemide, describes the song fairly well as it reflects on belifes, mental health and poverty. It looks at getting through the “hurricane” that could be depression and seeing through and finding/getting to the other side of it all. The song has zero intro and gets straight into the essesence of the song. The feeling of the lyrics is helped along with weeping, grungy guitar and swelling background vocals through the middle of the song. A great piece of work from a much loved artist.
