Taster: Re:Enactment – Problematic

Electronic/Pop/Dance-Rock

Since 2007, Re:Enactment have become a staple live band in Brisbane with a reputation for bringing the party in a Dance-Rock fashion. As a key band on the excellent DIY collective LoFly Records (Mr Maps, Nova Scotia, Toy Balloon), Re:Enactment are poised to break-through to national & international audiences.

‘The single ‘Problematic’ sees the band at their put-your-handbags-down-and-dance best’. It is by far the best of the three songs from their Talent For Retail EP and If the band continue in this direction big things are sure to follow. From Problematic you can start to feel a sound that spans that similar to Soulwax, Bloc Party and Cut Copy . With Re:Enactment now officially being managed by Paper Street this could be the final piece of the puzzle that these guys were missing. A debut album is due around November 2011 but for now enjoy the great video clip that accompanies Problematic and download Re:Enachment’s past EPs for free at Bandcamp.

This Just in: Kate Vigo – Wanna Run

Pop

‘Wanna Run’, is the second single from Kate Vigo’s upcoming release, Blue To Gold. Following the hypnotic disco jam, ’You’re Haunting Me’, ‘Wanna Run’ is an equally addictive proposition.

‘Wanna Run’ is an upbeat slice of electro-pop-rock, blessed with sunshine-speckled guitars overlaid with a Cure-esque synth riff and a bop around the lounge room in your jammies kind of beat – the perfect addition to your springtime playlist. Ostensibly detailing the struggle of finding one’s own path in life amid the tempest of competing expectations, the track’s punchy arrangement manages to find a perfect balance between vivacity and angst.

‘Wanna Run’ is indicative of the philosophy underpinning the creation of Blue To Gold. With renowned composer and producer Jan Skubiszewski at the production helm, Vigo has broadened her musical palette, taking influence from such divergent areas as disco electronica and indie folk to craft an elaborate yet delicately nuanced offering. A proper album in the true sense of the word, Blue To Gold explores two ends of the pop song spectrum; the moodier, darker side as evidenced in Vigo’s previous releases, harmonized with a snappier and more upbeat edge.

Vigo and her cohorts will launch ‘Wanna Run’ at The Toff In Town on October 6 before releasing her album Blue To Gold in March 2011 through The Planet Company/MGM.

INLAND SEA – No Time + Tour

Indie/folk

Inland Sea are back with yet another great song…

Since releasing their debut EP Traitor in late 2010, Brisbane ten-piece Inland Sea have gone from strength to strength. Traitor‘s lead single All Fall Down garnered high-rotation on Triple J, as well as an International Songwriting Award. 2011 has so far seen performances at Laneway and Playground Weekender festivals, as well as support slots for the John Steel Singers/Jonathan Boulet Here’s Johnny tour and the sold out Passenger Flight of the Crow tour. The ten- piece have shared their sound with much of the Australian East Coast and left them wanting more.

New single No Time and the One, Two, Ten Tour are set to fulfil that need.
Throughout October, Inland Sea will be joined by fellow up and coming Australian acts The Rescue Ships (NSW) and Jackson McLaren (VIC) for the “One, Two, Ten Tour” along the East Coast.

‘No Time’ picks up from where ‘Traitor’ left off, and focuses on the strange nature of nostalgia and how living in the moment leaves you with “no time to react”. The song builds from a reflective beginning to dramatic highs, utilising the full power, emotion and musicianship of all ten members. Inland Sea’s highly anticipated second EP is due for release in October through Brisbane label Plus One.

This Just In: Amaya Laucirica – No Excuses

Indie/Rock

‘No Excuses’ is the leading track off the new ‘Anywhere There’s You’ EP from Amaya, a sweet Melbourne musician. Contained on the EP are two live tracks from Amaya’s most recent album ‘Early Summer’ that featured in one of the privileged album of the week slots late last year on Tipple J and two previously unreleased tracks. After supporting Adalita from Magic Dirt when she toured the country, Amaya will now head out on her own headline tour in October to promote her new EP (dates below).

No Excuses is a rough and powerful female lead rock song. Though it does struggle to hold your attention for the entire 2 minutes and 52 seconds as it becomes a little monotonous. Good rift, good drums and great lyrics just missing a little change up. Compared to Amaya’s previous work it lacks the little creative flair and mysticism that surrounded her music before. It trudges on going through the paces of a song.
This song could have been something great and I’m sure there will be some truly great stuff on the way from Amaya so make sure you get to one of her very own headline shows if you can and let us know what you think of ‘No Excuses’.

This Just In: Khancoban – Cause And Chaos

Indie/Pop/Folk

Out today is the second full length album for the Melbourne five-piece, Arches Over The Sun, is a grand, sprawling affair which sees the band effortlessly melding musical styles and genres to produce an album that is both richly textured and deeply moving. It is also something of a departure from the style of khancoban’s previous alt-country and folk influenced releases.

Produced by Nick Huggins (Mick Turner, Kid Sam), and mastered by Casey Rice, (Tortoise, Dirty Three), Arches Over The Sun follows on from 2006’s self titled mini album, and 2008’s much lauded full length debut, “Limbs May Fall”.

The Second single from the Album is “Cause And Chaos” you can listen to it below or watch the ‘charming’ film clip featuring Jamima Puddleduck and a cheeseburger phone on youtube if you wish. I’m sure some will love it, but I personally think it detracts from a great song that when played without the clip is much much better.
‘Cause And Chaos’ is a soft and delicate song. They remind me of Augie March and Death Cab For Cutie but yet produce their own delightful sound that surrounds and flows past you. The Piano glides beautifully along the top of the guitars and drums that don’t demand to much attention but provide a great nucleus for the song.

‘Wherever You Go, There You Are’ is a sweet little pop tune. Featuring slide guitar, outstanding vocals and melody plus a beautiful arrangement with acute attention to detail. It makes me want to get up and just go for a drive, this could be due to some of the songs lyrics “Get up and go now, It’s not that far. Wherever you go, there you are.” Or my urge could be influenced by the wonderful clip that was Produced by B Films. and Directed by Sam Couzens.
‘Wherever You Go, There you are’ does everything just right. If you want more visit: http://www.mardilumsden.com

This Just In! Celadore – Kinks In Armour

Celadore – Kinks In Armour

Indie/Rock

Melbourne three piece Celadore’s new single ‘Kinks In Armour’ was released today, It comes from the band’s upcoming EP ‘The Bright And Blue’ due for release in September. Produced by none other than Chris Cheney, his first shot at production and what a triumph it was.

“Celadore are a band to watch… Neil Finn meets ‘The Bends’ era Radiohead meets You Am I. For a relatively young band, they possess a sense of melody and a depth to their songwriting that’s beyond their years. They are really great players who have found their own sound.” – Chris Cheney

‘Kinks In Armour’ is a one quality rock song. “If the Armour is your life then the kinks are the challenges that you’ve had and you’ve have been through, your battles.” The Vocals have a touch of gravel and edge to them. The rhythm is tight and Chris helps to bring out some great hooks and melodies. It’s a tune I’m sure you will enjoy.

For more info on Celadore and their social sites visit: http://www.celadore.com.au

If you want to see the making of ‘Kinks In Armour’ and see Celadore in the studio you check it out here.

The Late Update! (Film Clip Special)

TiGERTOWN – Still Breathing

TiGERTOWN have given us yet another fantastic song. ‘Still Breathing’ is a quiet acoustic gem. Full of feeling and homeliness – the film clip definitely adds to that vibe. They have replaced the drums and harmonies with, well nothing, TiGERTOWN have left it open and bare. ‘Still Breathing’ is raw, personal and open for reflection. Its a beautiful thinking/pondering song.

Inland Sea – Lord I Am Waiting

Inland Sea sent me a link to this video of theirs that was recorded with a single mike in one take at the new Contortionist Studios Warehouse in Brisbane. The song was written by Jeremy Hunter in the style of old southern gospel after having a bad time of it. It you love harmonies you HAVE to listen to this, not one instrument is used, only several unique voices. What a talented bunch of people.

Their new EP will be released at the end of September and I for one can not wait for it to arrive.

The Trouble With Templeton – Bleeders

The Trouble With Templeton now have a thrilling video to go with the chillingly great song ‘Bleeders’ and it does justice to every single second. It is magical in many ways… enjoy.

This Just In: Free -The Stoops featuring Georgi Kay (Produced by Rae)

Free is one of those songs that you love from the moment you hear it. It is fresh, crisp, clean and smooth. Great production and some awesome beats from the talented Rae featuring drums that bounce along the beefy synth. This track has summer written all over it, now we just need summer to roll around. The Rhymes and story flow easily thanks to the skill of The stoops and an amazing voice provided by brilliant Georgi Kay. Aus New Music Blog is tipping ‘Free’ as the feel good song of the year! Epic Tune!

The Stoops and Georgi Kay are both from Perth, WA. and met at last year’s WAM Song Of the Year awards night. Georgi approached The Stoops right after claiming the ultimate prize (2010 WAM Song of the Year) and asked if it would be possible to work together.
When Rae created this vibrant beat and sent it off to The Stoops, they decided to see if Georgi could come up with the hook and chorus to fit between the verses they had written. When Georgi got back to them her vocal was recorded without anyone else having heard or read any of her lyrics. As the combination of her vocals and this beat rang through speakers for the first time I’m sure everyone experienced a little chill.

Georgi Kay – Breakfast In Bedlam (Bonus Track, 2010 WAM Song of the Year)

Georgi Kay is a singer/songwriter from Perth, who has already racked up the sorts of accolades and awards that many artists spend decades working for, and she’s just getting warmed up. This song ‘Breakfast in Bedlam’ won the Western Australian Music Award for song of the year in 2010. She has also been nominated for a 2011 Independent Music Award for best Indie/Alternative/Hard Rock Song. Yes I said independent, aka without a record label though that is not that rare theses days, but how about being nominated and receiving these awards at the age of just eighteen and without a full length album under her belt! Georgi Kay does however have a debut EP out that you can get your hands on, called Strange Things. A full length debut album is expected towards the end of this year.

‘Breakfast in Bedlam’ is an infectious indie tune and shows Georgi’s vocal versatility in comparison to ‘Free’. This track has a darker energy, that slowly pulls you in. A beautiful song in itself and definitely worthy of its award. Enjoy.
